Hello Robert,
Surfing along this afternoon at work, I visited your site and went on a merry little journey to the past. I, too, was "there" and lived and breathed the "Summer of Love." Was also neighbor of Janis on Noe St. and dated her high school buddy, Tary Owens who I met at her house-warming party when she moved to Marin. Just prior to that, I had my "love child" who is now 30 yrs. old and living in Boulder (where I lived w/him and his sister, Jasmine, for 13 years). I now live in Seattle.
Have been having lovely "flashbacks" of Hippie Hill (near Children's Playground and the merry-to-round), going to the Human Be-In (lived across the street with my parents ast the time! They would have died if they knew where I "really" was!), and the music, concerts, and more music!
Just read "Scars of Sweet Paradise...." which really took me back in time.
Loved seeing your photos; I have a few of my own. How did we "grow up" so fast!?!
But, tell me, why doesn't anyone ever mention the Carousel Ballroom that was on Market and Van Ness? Some of my fondest memories were of that place! Not to say seeing the Hells Angels was a always a thrill (sarcasm here). However, they did play "security guard" pretty well.
I'm still looking for my "love child's" father who I met there in '68. My son, Christopher, was born in '69. Peter Wilmott couldn't deal with the hefty dose of reality when his "flower child" got pregnant. However, I managed to raise a pretty cool kid who thoroughly enjoyed the tour in '98 that I gave him of S.F. and where we lived back in the "old days." I may never find Peter, which is too bad for my son, but that was the price I paid and I have to live with that.
Well, now that I've reminisced the afternoon away on company time, it's time to go home for the weekend!

I like to take snapshots, too.
I am trying to get the people on the clown history mail list to identify the clown you have the image of. We all agree that it is definitely NOT Prince Paul and some of them worked with Prince Paul. There are a couple of possibilities, and there is an artist who painted his portrait. He will look through his notes to try to identify him.
Someone sent me an image that has both this clown and Prince Paul in it but I am not sure it is from a photograph.
Among favorite movies (no order): The Sting, Casablanca, Annie Hall, Exorcist, Terminator 2, The Hustler, and more...

I experienced the '60s from the UK, I was still only 14 in '67 but Sgt. Pepper woke me up, the Dead's Anthem of the Sun took my soul on a trip and when I came back there was Vietnam,Easy Rider,Woodstock,Altamont,Charlie Manson,The Paris Riots,The Oz Trials,The Furry Freak Brothers ... and so much innocence.
Favourite Films? oh, well .. Easy Rider of course, then Yellow Submarine, The Point, Fantasia (animations! ...do they count ?) ... a lot of the '60s films seem pretty wooden now , to be honest. 2001 was great. Dr.Who on the television. In the UK there was a banned film going round about what to do if there was a nuclear strike. That was really good but I don't recall the title. Oh and lastly, I still like Wonderwall, pretty quirky and jerky but somehow compelling. And George Harrison's soundtrack is great - really underrated I think.
Finally, thanks for taking those great photos of the 60's and really excellent that you put them up on the web for us to see. I lost all the pictures I took (things like Carnaby St., the free 1 day festivals at Hyde Park etc) and it's good to have a visual record from a sympathetic viewpoint.

Thanks for sharing part of your life with me, and giving me a perspective on a part of history that I was just a little too young to participate in (even if I was aware of it). I was especially impressed at the composition of your 'snapshots' - far beyond what I can do even when I set up a pose (I'm a part-time photographer).
Oh yeah - one of my favorite movies was "Nashville" - I saw it on a 'first date' with a woman was the biggest klutz I ever met. She dumped a tub of buttered popcorn on my lap, followed by a Pepsi, spilt her drink on me when we went out for dinner, and stepped on my feet while we were dancing - and it wasn't even slow dancing! Never saw her again after that night, but I do remember the movie :) Never even thought about it until I took the trip down your memory lane. Thanks again!

ok, back in the 60's I don't even think my mom had begun to menstruate, I wasn't even a twinkle in my fathers eye yet. Now I am at the tender age of 17. I have recently read the electric kool-aid acid test, this book brought many insights to my life and has practically changed my way of living. While cruising threw the web on a rainy afternoon I came across your website. I had my own mental pictures of what life was really like in the world at that time but I wasn't sure, now I know. I think my favorite picture is of a woman w/ the sign saying drop acid, not bombs. How true that was to life at the moment. I have been studying photography in school and one day I hope to take wonderful and monumental and capturing moments like yourself. You captured a generation, and personally I think it was a great one. I just wish I too can capture my generation w/ such awe.

Hmm, I'm not sure what "Include me in..." means, but I wanted to salute your fine photographs and memories that are very close to mine. I went to Marin County, Calif. in the Spring of 1968; have lived there 5 different times o'er the years, but now live in Austin, Texas, where I "started from" (in terms of the Counterculture). Spent the Spring, Summer & Fall of 1970 at Morningstar commune outside of Taos, NM...am back in touch with a few of those folks. Also, was in an area called Takilma, Oregon in 1968 & again in 1969. I knew about you in a brazilian magazine called Repôblica, where there was an interview with Ken Keasey. I've found it really interesting. I'm 30 years old, female, journalist, and I didn't live your experiences here in this poor country, but we have curiosity, criticism and some intelligence, maybe...I like the "latest" movies like Lost Highway by David Lynch and at the same time directors like Theo Angelopoulos and Pedro Almodvar.
